Another Area 8 Championship is in the books! Whether you were grinding through the stages as a competitor, working tirelessly behind the scenes on staff, or sweating it out as an RO, stepping off the range after a major match always brings a unique mix of exhaustion, relief, and post-match reflection.
The 2026 installment at Thurmont Sportsman’s Club delivered everything we’ve come to expect from a premier regional championship: technical stage designs, tricky props, physical layouts, and a stellar community of shooters that made the tough weather and long round counts entirely worth it.

The Match Experience: Flow vs. Frustration
Going into a major, everyone has a game plan. Mine? Stick to smooth transitions, trust the sights, and keep mental errors to a minimum.

• The Highs: There’s nothing quite like walking away from a stage knowing you executed your plan down to the second. Stepping up to bays lined with wide-open steel arrays and tight technical target placements really tests your target acquisition and rhythm under pressure.
• The Lows (and the Lessons): Of course, it wouldn’t be a major match without a humbling moment. When the array layouts get complex or the pacing slips, the micro-mistakes add up fast against a stacked field. Recovering mentally from a tough string and bouncing back on the next bay is always the true test.

Stage Design & Match Operations

A massive shoutout to the Match Directors, Range Masters, builders, and the entire crew at Thurmont. Putting together a seamless multi-stage layout is no small feat.
The stage designs struck a fantastic balance: they offered plenty of risk-reward options for the division top dogs while remaining entirely approachable for newer competitors. The props kept us on our toes, and the flow of the squads kept bottlenecks to a minimum. Special credit goes to the Range Officers who stood out in the elements all weekend to keep the match running safely and efficiently—we literally couldn’t do this without you.
Range Life & Community

Beyond the scoresheet, Area 8 always delivers on the atmosphere. Catching up with old squadmates, meeting new faces from across the region, and sharing war stories over food is what keeps us coming back season after season. (And let’s be honest, hitting up the food trucks and grabbing a cold treat between bays was an absolute lifesaver!)
