How to get your West Virginia concealed handgun license
West Virginia licenses are issued by your county sheriff. Under W. Va. Code §61-7-4, the general steps are:
- Complete a qualifying handgun handling and live-firing course.
- Submit the state application to the sheriff of your county. Nonresidents may apply to the sheriff of any West Virginia county.
- Pass the background check. The sheriff has 45 days after the required background checks are complete to issue or deny the license.
- Pay the application fee: $50 for residents and $100 for nonresidents. Honorably discharged veterans and honorably retired law enforcement officers are exempt from the fee for a resident license.
A license is valid for five years. Applicants must be at least 21 for a standard license. Fees and rules can change, so confirm current requirements with your county sheriff before you apply.
West Virginia training tax credit
West Virginia law allows a tax credit of up to $50 for training fees paid in connection with applying for a license (W. Va. Code §61-7-4(s)). The state uses Form CCGP-1 for this credit. Ask your tax preparer whether you qualify.
Do I need a license to carry in West Virginia?
West Virginia allows eligible residents and nonresidents to carry without a license, which the West Virginia Attorney General calls constitutional carry. A license can still matter when you travel: approximately 37 states honor the West Virginia concealed handgun license. Reciprocity changes without notice, so check the Attorney General’s current map and the laws of each state before you carry. Our reciprocity page has more information.
