Chasing the Beep: Road-Tripping from West Virginia to Ohio for the Queen City Steel Challenge Championship
There is a specific rhythm to match weekends that starts well before you ever unbag a pistol on the firing line. It begins in the driveway before sunrise, loading range bags, mag pouches, and ammo cans into the back while the rest of the neighborhood is still asleep. This weekend, the road pointed west—crossing out of the rolling hills of West Virginia and into southwest Ohio for the Queen City Steel Challenge Championship at Miami Rifle & Pistol Club.

The interstate drive through Appalachia is great for mental prep: visualizing draw strokes, transitions, and sight pictures, while locking in the plan to respect the stop plate.

Eight Stages, Five Targets, Zero Room for Hesitation
Major matches carry an energy you just don’t get at local weekend shoots. Walking up to the bays, you are immediately greeted by that unmistakable, chaotic percussion—clean double-taps, crisp splits, and the ringing harmony of white steel plates echoing across the range.
The Queen City match ran all eight classic SCSA stages:

• Speed Burners: Stages like Smoke & Hope and Roundabout reward raw visual patience. If you trust your index and call your shots off the flash of the dot, the splits feel effortless. Over-confirm, and the tenths bleed away fast.
• The Precision Checks: Five to Go and Outer Limits are the great equalizers. Stepping into the box on Outer Limits, moving between boxes while keeping your cadence smooth, demands pure discipline. If you get greedy on that back 18×24-inch plate, an early transition will bite you immediately.
• The Cadence Tests: Showdown, Speed Option, Accelerator, and The Pendulum all come down to flow. You can’t muscle the gun; you have to let your vision drive the transition and trust your trigger finger to follow.

The Road Home
Beyond the times on the tablet, the real payoff of traveling for a major match is always the community. Catching up with shooters from across the region, swapping stage strategies between strings, and watching junior competitors run blazing splits keeps this sport top-tier.
The gear held up, the sights tracked clean, and the road trip gave us plenty of data to take back to home range dry fire. Until the next buzzer sounds.

Although this is a 7-hour commute from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, Tri-State Training, LLC is excited about this trip.
