Obtaining your MD wear & carry permit

  1. Complete the 16-hour Maryland Wear & Carry Class. We offer this class for $325.
  2. Complete the on-line application at licensingportal.mdsp.maryland.gov
  3. The first step to this process is to create an account. This requires you to have access to a working email address.
  4. Once you create your account, you will receive an immediate email requesting that you verify your account. Once this is completed, simply follow the prompts of the application. It asks for basic identifying information, address, and contact information.
  5. If you do not complete the application initially, the system will save your work, and you can pick up where you left off.
  6. Follow the prompts page by page until you get to the end.
  7. You will need contact information for three references that cannot be related to you. You will need your employment information for the last five years, as well as your domestic relations information. This is simply everyone you have been in a romantic relationship with over the last ten years.
  8. The system will ask you for your PCN#. This comes from the receipt for your Livescan fingerprints. Tri-State Training, LLC strongly encourages applicants to complete their fingerprints last, as you have 72 hours after your Livescan fingerprints are taken to complete and submit your on-line application.
  9. At the end of the application is where you upload certain documents. These include your Completion Certificate, Livescan Fingerprints Receipt, Qualification Scoresheet, as well as a passport photo. Tri-State Training, LLC strongly recommends that you upload these documents separately to your computer.
  10. When you get to the end, you will have to submit your Completion Certificate first. There is a drop-down menu, locate the title ‘Certificate of Successful Handgun Training,’ then upload your certificate. Next, on the far right, there is another drop-down menu. This is the list of all certified handgun instructors. Locate the name of your instructor and click on their name.
  11. The next upload will be your passport photo, followed by your Qualification Scoresheet, and then your Livescan Fingerprints Receipt. Also, remember to place the number from this receipt in the appropriate box on the very first screen.
  12. The next page will capture your digital signature and your attestation under penalty of perjury that you have provided factual information.
  13. Lastly, you will pay your application fee: $125 for an initial application and $75 for a renewal. These prices are set by the State of Maryland and are as up-to-date as possible.
  14. For a renewal Maryland Wear & Carry application, fingerprints are NOT currently required, and a new photo is not required either. We offer the Maryland renewal class for $125.
  15. The applicant does have to upload their Certificate of Completion as well as their qualification form and pay their $75 application fee.
  16. Maryland WILL NOT permit an applicant to apply for their renewal until ninety (90) days prior to its expiration. However, the applicant can complete their 8-hour renewal class up to two years prior to the expiration of their permit.
  17. The applicant ALSO must complete the online renewal process prior to the 13th day of the month in which their permit expires. If the applicant does not renew by this timeline, as established by the State of Maryland, the applicant will need to take the 16-hour course again.
  18. The applicant typically will not receive any information from Maryland concerning their renewal until around sixty (60) days after applying, and all communication between the State of Maryland and the applicant will be via email.
  19. Tri-State Training, LLC can complete the initial or renewal application for applicants for $50.
  20. Lastly, Maryland does not honor any other state’s permit!!
